PHP List forums are not letting me post, Cant post links

Postby brian carrol » 12:36am, Thu 17 Apr, 2008

There are no links in my post. It lets me post some things, and others it does not. I am not posting any links, and it is telling me that I am trying to post a link. I am not posting a link.

It looks like the forums are treating the names of applications such as w_g_e_t and G_E_T as links. Interesting

Yes it really is quite sad that forum spam ended up making life more difficult for new forum users. But wading through tons of sleezy spam posts wasn't doing any good to forum readability either, so personally I am quite happy with the effectiveness of anti-spamming measures, though I sympatize with first time forum users.

Posting limitations should ease up after a certain number of posts.

Think it's ten posts before you can post links, what you can do (I believe) is to put your code within [ code] boxes, and tick the box next to Disable HTML in this post.

Things ARE better than they were even a month or so ago on the forums, at the beginning of the year out of 100 posts, 95 were basically spam or various degrees.

What you do get, however, is a post like this, and I could make ten of those to get my quotum of ten emails.

I have a question after installation which involves domain names. I can't even use triple w, "dot", then the word "mydomain" to explain my problem. So the antispam rule is set a bit too tight.

I also have to wait for seven days and nine messages just to explain my problem. A simple exclusion (like, URLs with "mydomain" are OK) would be nice...

Yes, it really was bad. I hope we won't return to that, though I saw about 20 new spam posts yesterday. I'm afraid forum spammers have found another loophole, or anti-spam measures might have been relaxed, which IMO would be a *bad* idea.

Woah, I didn't realize it was that bad! We don't have that with our forum... All automated posts, or humans?

Again, I understand the rational behind, but I'm wondering why this forum is getting so many false positive, where other forums do have few spam and still posting is possible...

Now, the 7 days are over, I just have to post 8 times nonsense to be allowed to post real stuff... crazy, isnt't it ?

I'll still try to post "useful":

I don't have _the_ solution to fight forum spam. Maybe try implementing a captcha when the post is suspect, for instance. I recommend re-captcha, rather easy to setup, managed, and efficient.
