I agree, I have bought my domains at a different place that where my website are hosted at, although for some people it may be easier to have their domain and hosting with one company but it won't always be the most economical way to do it.

I have no problems with domains and hosting being with two providers. Hostgator is used for my hosting and a combination of Godaddy and Namecheap are used for all of my domains.

Never experienced any problems with this setup, nameserver changes are virtually instant with both Godaddy and Namecheap.

You should have no problems.

as far as i know there is no known disadvantage if your web host and domain registrar are two different companies. i have my hosting at hostgator as well but my domains are registered at 1&1. i like the free privacy

It's preferred to have the web hosting and domain registered at 2 unrelated places.

Several years ago there were many small hosting companies that did both.
It was a big scam.
The small hosting companies registered everything in their own names and not the clients.
The clients got ripped off big time when they tried to leave for another host.
...it's too long to explain. Just keep them separate ok.

I would also rather have web hosting and domain registration with 2 different providers. It doesn't have any disadvantage and as already mentioned you have more privacy and you can't be scammed that easily. At least I haven't heard of any problems with two different providers so far.

web host and domain name can be of same company, but its better to use them seperately, because of the following
1. if the company goes under, then you dont have all the assets at same place, you may lose your domain name, you may lose your website but not both.
2. if your account gets compromised, you wont lose eveything

That is the most common situation. Usually you register a domain with a company and then you host your website in a hosting company. So registers for domains and hosting in a hosting company.
Why ? Because you get a much better deal. Registers most of the times offer hosting but with a higher price, and other way around too ... hosting companies offer domains for a higher price.

Configuring your nameserver to tell your register that you are hosting (serving) your website in another machine (using an ip address), is easy and once done it will never give you any problem.
