PHPList developers interested in Design contributions?

Technical discussion for developers and service providers

Would you like to see the PHPList interface updated with a new design?

No, I like it the way it is.

Not sure. I'd have to see some ideas first.

PHPList developers interested in Design contributions?

Postby dansinch » 3:07am, Thu 01 Mar, 2007

Are the developers of PHPList at all interested in contributions from designers (front end/interface design)? And if so how does an interested designer get involved?

Many open source projects are coming out with slick new interfaces these days (I'm thinking Drupal 5 and Wordpress 2) and something as powerful as PHPList shouldn't be any different.

I'm going to be finishing up a personal project soon and will have some extra free time. I'll probably take a little time and put together some mock ups for a better PHPList admin interface. Obviously it's a lot of work as there are a ton of different screens and design decisions to be made. But if any of the developers show interest in the designs I'd be glad to take it further.

Hopefully I'll have something together within the next few months.

Great idea! And a useful contribution I think, specially if customization would be more accessible/easier to users.

I guess you would have a better chance of catching the developers' attention if you post a feature request at www.mantis.phplist.com and attach the modified files there in the form of a patch.

Note:
A number of users have created a customized design for the admin module, but didn't submit a patch, and/or didn't follow a thorough test path in CVS. This makes inclusion in the main code much more difficult, and reduces the chances of changes being implemented in a future stable release.

Anyway, you could take a look at these custom designs:
- colizer created a working alternative design for the admin modul, which has a Windows-like look and feel: http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?t=5828
- phpRoomer created another design, but it remains unclear whether it is past beta testing and actually working. http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?t=10206

why not changing the architecture to the following:

use extjs as UI lib
Communicate with server via JSON RPC

PRO:
- RPC can be used with php as well
- Faster UI after first loading
- Desktop feeling
- Easy skinable

Con
- refactoring
- js needed in client

Best regards

I think an update would be useful especially for new users such as myself.
