Bounce handling not quite right

Postby gokaran » 7:52pm, Mon 03 Jun, 2013

Hi all
I have been using PHP list for many years now
I have been handling bouces successfully for this time

Recently i installed PHPlist for a client and been maganing his emails but i can seem to get the bounce handling 100%

$message_envelope = '';

$bounce_protocol = 'pop';

$bounce_mailbox_host = '';
$bounce_mailbox_user = '';
$bounce_mailbox_password = 'passwordhere';

$bounce_mailbox_port = "110/pop3/notls";

$bounce_mailbox = '/var/spool/mail/listbounces';
$bounce_mailbox_purge = 1;
$bounce_mailbox_purge_unprocessed = 1;

$bounce_unsubscribe_threshold = 50;

Now all is in order
The bounces are being received at the box

when I click on process bounces I get

"11530 bounces to fetch from the mailbox
Please do not interrupt this process"

It remains like that forever. The emails are never deleted form the mailbox and not being imported to PHPlist.

That number of 11530 is correct. That is how many bounces are in the mail box

However I must add that it worked correctly once , the first time.
Version is 2.10.13

The settings on my other installation are simliar (different domain names) but the version is 2.10.10

What can i do to correct this or fix this problem

I must add that both are cpanel installs

I guess that the number of bounces, 11530, is too many to be processed in one run, and the process is either timing out or being killed.

You can reduce the number of bounces that phplist will process in one run by editing file admin/processbounces.php. Line 246 should be

Code: Select all
  return processMessages($link,100000);

Change 100000 to 1000 and see whether that helps.

Also this setting is way too large.
Code: Select all
$bounce_unsubscribe_threshold = 50;

You don't want to keep sending emails to invalid email addresses, as some services such as gmail, aol, will use that as a factor in determining whether you are sending spam.

I have it a go and with the same result

I have changed the mailbox and it worked once. I will try it proper tomorrow after the email campaign
I suspect that that the fact that the number of emails is more than 5000 could be a problem.
I will test and let you know
