Timeouts on new server

I moved my client and her phpList to a new server in September. She did a couple of successful mailouts but recently keeps getting "504 Gateway Time-out". I enquired with the webhost and they cited "limitation to the resources of shared hosting packages". We're only talking 320 members. Is that fair enough? Should we be moving elsewhere?

See if you can find out what limits the host are talking about, it should be somewhere in the host's FAQs...

The trouble is, the "resources of shared hosting packages" are shared over a number of customers, like yourself and they may be quite limited. It may well be worth your moving hosts to one that doesn't have such tight limits.

OK I've asked but I'm not holding my breath. This is a budget host and there are plenty of reasons to move, truth be told. Giving straight answers is not one of their strengths.

But when considering a new webhost, is there a specific question I should be asking to make sure we don't get caught out again? Moving is a pain.

Ensure that PHP and MySQL are available and find out the email limits.

If you are interested, I use lunarpages.co.uk (or .com) for my main hosting and they are both affordable and offer both good service and support.

Thanks, but PHP and SQL, I'd like to think, are standard! I'll definitely get some kind of guarantee on email limits though.

Hmm, enquired with another reasonably-priced hosting sevice and got this: "Unfortunately PHPlist cannot be installed on our servers as the server does not comply with the requirements need to run."

Clearly SQL and PHP are not enough. I'll keep looking...
