Probably stupid newbie question re: subscribe page(s)

Postby milauskas » 4:28pm, Sat 17 Mar, 2007

Hi,

I just found PHPList and it seems great. I've installed it locally on my Mac to test it out. I've created the database and installed it and am working through the admin section. My question is this:

How do I implement the subscribe page? Where would a user go in order to subscribe? Do I need to create a page? Perhaps I missed something in the documentation.

Let's say a visitor finds my site. How do I let him know that there's an email newsletter he can subscribe to?

I know this is probably very simple, but right now I'm at a loss. Thanks!

Hi there, welcome to phpList!

There is a default subscribe page, or you can create your own. If you browse to yourdomain.com/lists you should see the default page.

One of my sites has a somewhat customised subscribe page at http://www.wharfedalefestival.co.uk/wha ... temid,103/ which you are most welcome to have a look at.

As for the how to let people know about it, add a standard hyperlink to the subscribe page as in the example in the first paragraph above. Mine is available from a menu item, but any hyperlink should work as long as you have the address of the folder /lists/
My sites:- http://wharfedalefestival.co.uk, http://ilkleygardeners.org.uk, http://emergencyaid.net, http://dragonrider.co.uk
Latest phpList version is now 3.0.12 (3 February 2015) and requires a minimum of MySQL 5.0 and PHP 5.3.x

Not sure it's working

Hi Dragonrider,

I'm assuming the default subscribe page is spage.php.

If that's correct, then something's wrong.

Let me back up and say that when I go into the subscribe pages part of the admin section and I click "view" to view my subscribe page (for an active list) I get this:

Error: please make sure that index.php is your default document for a directory

If you have just installed PHPlist and get this message, make sure that your Apache configuration has somewhere

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html

or that at least index.php is mentioned before index.html

For other webservers please consult your manual to find how to make index.php be the default document for a directory.

Alternatively you can delete the file "index.html" in the lists directory of PHPlist

You probably want to be here or here.

I've deleted index.html from the lists directory so all I've got there is index.php. I'm on a Mac so Apache is installed by default, however, if I need to make some change to Apache I'm not sure how to go about it. Wouldn't merely deleting index.html from the lists directory suffice?

Does the home page of my site affect this in any way. It is index.html, but it's not in the lists directory. I wouldn't think it would.

Still at a loss...

After looking over things again, I see that spage.php is probably not the subscribe page (it's just the subscribe pages page in the admin section, correct?). If so, then I don't see a default subscribe page in the lists directory. Did I miss something?

Your visitors should find the subscribe page in: www.yourdomain.com/lists/
You can use a link in your website to load this page.
