smtp not working with 3.0.2

Postby wcsmith » 10:00pm, Thu 22 Aug, 2013

I installed phplist on my laptop. set the smtp settings in the config file and set up a campaign but when I try to send a test message (to one of the email list members) I get an error that the send operation failed.

I have tried to send smtp mail just putting a php file and using the phpmailer that comes with phplist and it succeeded OK. I have used phpmailer before with other php code and it seems to be working OK. I suspect it is something in the phplist config file but I don't see what it would be.

I have attached a screen shot of the error, a list of a successful phpmailer (using smtp) and my phplist config file.

laptop is running windows vista with wampserver and PHP 5.2.8

Thanks in advance for the help.

Text file does not seem to want to upload, so here it is inline...

OK. I set the smtp debug and got the following output:
I don't know alot about the inner workings of SMTP but the server (at smittsywebworks.com) does not like the following SMTP message from the client (ie phplist):
CLIENT -> SMTP: EHLO localhost/wordpress351/phplist
Can anyone explain why the EHLO message has localhost/wordpress351/phplist and why this is causing the error.

SMTP -> FROM SERVER:220 ESMTP Sat, 24 Aug 2013 11:24:38 -0400: UCE strictly prohibited

Can anyone explain why the EHLO message has localhost/wordpress351/phplist and why this is causing the error.

I think this is because that is where you've installed it and I for one have never managed to get SMTP working on a loclhost (pc based) installation, I've always found it needs to be on a server to have a chance of actually sending any mail.
My sites:- http://wharfedalefestival.co.uk, http://ilkleygardeners.org.uk, http://emergencyaid.net, http://dragonrider.co.uk
Latest phpList version is now 3.0.12 (3 February 2015) and requires a minimum of MySQL 5.0 and PHP 5.3.x

phplist seems to use the website address on the config > settings page for the EHLO command.

That value should be only the server name, probably localhost in your case. It looks like you might have entered localhost/wordpress351/phplist.

I have removed the content of your config file from the first post. It's probably not a good idea to include all that in a public forum.

Thanks for the reply. That seems to be it, I changed the website address to localhost and it is working OK.

I tried to upload the config file as an attachment but it didn't work, so I added it inline.

Thanks for the help...
