phplist sent test mail failed

I installed apache with php and mysql. I got phplist to install nicely with database configured. I set the test mode to 0 in config.php so it is no longer in debug mode. I set myself as admin and subscriber and attempt to send test mail to my own hotmail account. The problem is I kept getting send test mail to <user> failed. I also tried using cofig_extended.php as config.php, but it also does not work. I assume phplist is using the php mail function to send the email. I am not using any simple mail transfer protocol because I am not sure what it is. I saw in a stackoverflow post showing that there is a bug for simple mail transfer protocol that is causing this problem, but I could not locate the code in my file. I tried the campaign method too, it is not sending any mails out. I would like to know what is causing phplist to fail sending any mail out. Is there an option in config.php that is causing this problem or is there a bug in the code? I am also running on Apache localhost, not sure if that is the problem.

A few questions first, which version of phpList are you running please? You refer to config_extended (which is Version 3) but you are posting in Version 2 forums.

Are you running this on your own computer (localhost) or on a web based server? If the former, have you got phpMail working??

SMTP is your regular mail account, eg: hotmail/yahoo/your domain etc.

Sorry, I thought version 2 means a different category zone. I am running phpList3.0.5 I think. I am running it on my own computer localhost with apache server setup. I got php to work so I assume the php mail function should work. It would be good to have this post moved to version 3 zone.

Have moved post to Version 3 (of phpList) forums.

Unless you have phpmail installed on your local computer, as far as I know, you can't send mail out.

Yo9u don't say what, if any tools you are using to run Apache, but I've only used Xammp and Ammps on my computer. Xammp is supposed to have phpmail option whereas Ammps does not, to the best of my knowledge. But regardless, I've never managed to get phpmail running under either service.

I run both but I like Ammps best as my copy was supplied by Softicious which includes all the server installs that they offer to servers, but some thing on my desktop clashes with the MySQL module, whereas my laptop lets it work perfectly. Xammps works on my desktop and laptop but is not as user friendly in my view.

I got it to work now with sendmail program in Linux. The problem is sendmail is very slow. I want to replace it with mailutils but mailutils does not send out any mails even when it shows success. Did anyone with Linux platform got a faster working program or got mailutils to work?
