Can I send an email to only half of my list?

Postby cagliano » 7:38am, Fri 13 Feb, 2015

PHPLIST version: the last available

Let's say I have a List of 100k subscriber. For certain reason ( eg: A/B test ) I'd like to send an email to only a certain cluster of my db.. just take for example 30% of my list, randomically, without any specific criteria.

Something like:.. take the userid, if it is odd, send, if it is even.. do not send..

It is possible?

Thanks!

phplist doesn't support that.

The simplest approach is to create a new list that contains the subset of subscribers to which you want to send. Export your subscribers, manipulate the set in a spreadsheet and then import the resultant set into a new list.

Thanks for your kind reply.

I think we will create some sort of workaround using "attributes".

let's say the attribute is a random generated number from 1 to 10 and let's call this attribute "modulo".

Well, if I want to send my email to half of my db, I'll select all "modulo" from 1 to 5
If I want to send my email to 1/10th of my db, modulo=1 and so on.

thanks!

I guess that you then will use the Segment plugin to send only to the subset?

I can look to enhance the Segment plugin to make this a bit easier. Using your original suggestion of the userid, the plugin could allow a further condition comprising the user id and a regular expression. When a campaign is sent, only those subscribers whose user id matches the regular expression would be selected.

So to choose a random 20%, choose the user ids that end in 1 or 2, the regular expression could be "[12]$".
Let me know if this approach is of any use.
