500 Server Error

@toritaiyo - I did try creating another account with a username and password only containing letters and numbers. no go.

So, I still have the mysterious black page loading after copying files to the server - but before I even get to install.

Has anyone made any progress with this problem? @leonardolg ? @elrod ?

I have been trying everything, modifying files, reading almost all topics about this problem and... "blank page". Exactly like your site. I only see that @#!?%$ "blank page".

I even read topics in foruns about PHP, but they are more sofisticated for me and I can't see topics about our problem.

I'm about giving up. God, help-us.

Hey Leonardo, Zak and the company.
I've got the same bloody error 500. I've wasted the most part of the day on applying I've found on this forun and others, and nothing.
I've commented the magic line.
I've checked I've got all the correct lines in all the correct .htaccess files.
I have manually set all the directories to 755 and every and each file to 644.
And nothing:

"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log."

Leonardo, what could be making the blank page to appear (perhaps, just perhaps) is your apache configuration, which is not showing errors on screen. It's a config setting. (That was just a suggestion for the blank page)
But what seems not to have any solution is the error 500, at least for me, and as I've seen, for some other users that couldn't get their problems fixed. It seems to be such a common problem (beyond just removing the "magic line") that I would suggest the developers to tackle it. (Again, that was just a suggestion)

Anyway, I am just giving up now and going for something more simple that won't get me wasting yet another day just to be able to start the installation.

Unless someone gets enlightened by a solution.

I would love to try and edit my htaccess file, to see if what any of you guys are talking about works in my case on my server!!! I don't even have an htaccess file to begin with! It is nowhere in the lists directory I have uploaded to my server. Where can I get one? I will try creating one and pasting the code in that was kindly listed a few posts above this one.

I have downloaded the latest zip (phplist-2.10.10.zip) and followed installation instructions (uploading lists directory to server, etc.) -- no htaccess file anywhere!

OK, I found my htaccess file after a couple of uploads. Editing it as advised still got me the 500 error that everyone else is finding.

So, I finally went back to 2.10.9, doing a clean install automatically via Fantastico panel in Cpanel. I can access PHPList once again. However, I am still getting the issues I had before that prompted me to try to upgrade, and I can't find solutions for them on the forum: suddenly I am not getting any HTML messages at all -- only plain text messages come through, and I can't preview what my message will look like.

I am getting Error Message 500, I tried all the suggestions mentioned in this topic but they did not work for me so I deleted the entire .htaccess file and the error message went away. Do you think this is a wise thing to do/by doing this will it cause problems?

I am running the latest version 2.10.10

Well, if removing the .htaccess file works, it sounds like you didn't successfully make the changes to the file as suggested above.

You really need the contents of the .htaccess file, prior to the php_flag lines, keeping for security in your .htaccess file.

You could then create your own php.ini file for the lists folder

Had the dreaded 500 server error. I posted a solid fix here in another thread:

May help others which are on cPanel. Not a bug, but install procedure issue.
