Hey Guys,

Hope you are all good today!
Been trying to send newsletters via gmail's smtp server.

I can confirm that it works when I send though a server that is clear smtp, google uses tls (ssl) and thats where I think the problems comes in.

Will keep checking but so far all I get is

Mailer Error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.

Have emailed momotiki to PM me his files, so will have a look and put my solution here when I find success,

Until then may you all have a nice day,

Wins

$bounce_mailbox_password = 'userpassword';

SMTP
define("PHPMAILERHOST",'smtp.gmail.com');

$phpmailer_SMTPSecure = "ssl";
$phpmailer_smtpuser = 'username@gmail.com';
$phpmailer_smtppassword = 'userpassword';
$phpmailer_smtpport = '465' ;
$phpmailer_SMTPAuth = true;

I will appreciate all the help from everyone.

hi waqas,

hope you are well mate.
i have tried this for a long time but could never get my mail to send via gmail's smtp server. in the end i figured it could probably be something with phpmailer but i coulnt make it work.

if you are on your own server i can help you with a postfix setup though?
i send all my newsletters via postfix and cron send it for me, so it's wicked!

let me know,

hello peeps,

I have gotten gmail and newsletters to work, however I was using a commercial mailer. I don't think it's a good idea and won't be using it myself because of the following.

My mails don't arrive. It's as if google trash them and they never get delivered. I have tried sending 5000 at one go ;)
not one arrived. I then tried to send 5 - nothing came through, I then tried to send 1 very hour, nothing came through.

The conclusion I have drawn is, yes it is a nice idea, yes we would all like to send email through google, but the reality is, it's is wrong, and there is no way for you to track those emails, no way for you to know if they arrived.

my suggestion would be use either a local smtp server or rent one, i can set one up for you easy and i won't block your mails.

I wish I had great news for you guys :D but that's where I stand with the phplist gmail smtp thing, the bounces work flawlessly though and I am still using gmail for my bounces.

hope you guys have a great day!
wins

Google apps sending limit

Postby chrisvella02 » 11:37am, Fri 01 Feb, 2008

I managed to configure PHPlist to work with google apps thanks to the instructions given (after adding the missing semi-colon).

However, google apps has a limit of 500 different recipients.

To overcome this issue, I was thinking of having two config.php scripts with two different addresses and use a cron job to switch between the two. in this manner I would double the amount of mails sent per day.

Any feedback is more than welcome.

For Bouncing Process with Pop3

Postby quidware » 3:23am, Thu 24 Apr, 2008

I was very determinant. If others have got the things to work fine, I should be able too.

If you have trouble with the Pop3 (for the Bounces), and you have already tried all the possibilities in this topic (or the other ones of Gmail and PHP List)...

TRY THIS...

Ask your host-manager or support technicians to check that your Port 995 is open for outgoing connections. My support area said it was ok, but they "restarted the firewall-just to be sure" , and JAY!! Like a CHARM!

YES, for some it may be a big deal or complicated thing, because it may not be of just a few minutes, but if that solved my problem, maybe it will with your's too. The simplest code now works fine.

## P S :
How I got there? Easy, making a very specific searching in google, and found in PHPClasses ORG a thread about Manuel Lemo's Pop3-email-client-Class and read this as an answer of support technician to someone with problems...
---
Port 995 was open for incoming connections but not for outgoing ones which has been opened now and your script is working fine now.
---

CHEERS!

Postby Guest » 11:56am, Sat 02 Aug, 2008

Hi,

I'm using google apps for my domain, but using php mailer to send emails.

I'm facing problem in processing bounces...

This error comes across...

Cannot create POP3 connection to pop(DOT)gmail(DOT)com: Can't open mailbox {pop(DOT)gmail(DOT)com:995/pop3/ssl/novalidate-cert}INBOX: invalid remote specification
Identifying consecutive bounces
Nothing to do
Identifying consecutive bounces
0 users processed

Any clue?

Not a fix, but got it work using forwarding email

Postby Guest » 9:49am, Thu 07 Aug, 2008

Hi,

I still have the same error... even after trying all methods discussed here. Port 995 outgoing is also opened on hosting server, but still it doesn't work.

But Now I've got it work by forwarding all bounced email to another mail box (different than google apps) on my other domain name & then setup config.php to access bounce from that account.. and it worked just perfect without single error.
