Very interesting article. I took the liberty of posting an excerpt of it at mantis.

Thanks for submitting the link!

After installing Phplists on my server, I was spammed with fake subscriptions about 200 a day with emails like john123@yahoo.com, all with domain yahoo.com, so I read all posts in this thread to find a solution.

The custom code I put at beginning of accesscheck.php is the following:
Code: Select all
$valid_user_agent = isset($_SERVER["HTTP_USER_AGENT"]) && $_SERVER["HTTP_USER_AGENT"] != "";
$valid_referrer = isset($_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"]) && strpos($_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"],$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']);

I know this is trivial compared to all considerations I read in this very instructive topic, but since ALL spam on my server stopped, I just wanted to share it in case somebody else is having the same trouble.

Method to foil bots

Postby DeweyW » 3:55am, Tue 03 Apr, 2007

I added an attribute/field (hidden) to my submit form. How can I tell phpList to ignore any entries that has anything in that field?

I can go through the members section and delete anyone that has an entry in that field, but I would lie the program to do that automagically.

It seems this thread was active until November but hasn't been updated and no solution was posted. Any help here?

Version 2.10.4 includes an (experimental) spam blocking feature, which is enabled by default.

And I might add ... spam blocking in 2.10.4 works GREAT!!Stops spam subscriptions cold and no false alarms yet either.
