phplist 2.10.12 bug daily send of messages doesn't process

Postby mrmckoy » 12:32pm, Sat 15 May, 2010

On extremely large message sends i always have 5 or 6 addresses that the queue never completes sending to... i end up having to suspend the message when done.

i have verified this affects all phplist installations. using 2.10.12.

Are you using a cron job to process your queue or are you doing it manually?

using a cron... Any other messages I schedule send with no problem. The daily and weekly ones send once... then never again.

Do the email queue processing reports list any errors or failed emails?

Select users who are not receiving the message and try to see if anything looks odd about those users. Assuming you do not use attribute criteria in your messages, this query should do the trick (assuming you use default table prefixes):

Code: Select all
SELECT user.*
FROM phplist_user_user user
  JOIN phplist_listuser luser
    ON luser.userid = user.id
  LEFT JOIN (SELECT userid
              FROM phplist_usermessage
            WHERE messageid = 1) umsg
  ON umsg.userid = user.id
WHERE luser.listid = 1
  AND umsg.userid = NULL
  AND user.confirmed = 1
  AND user.blacklisted = 0

[edit: Make sure you replace the messageid and listid values to the actual message and list ids you are having problems with.]

hey there. I actually just looked at the first 13 manually. everything looked good in the database. I can screenprint it for you. i'll just black out the email addresses.

Well, the email address is the most likely culprit. When the queue process finishes without sending the emails to all users, does the message status get changed to 'sent' or does it remain 'inprocess'?

well one of the users is my email. I checked mysql and there are no special characters... everything looks fine. i'm not blacklisted as i receive non-repeating scheduled and manually made emails without a problem. its only the daily and weekly emails i have scheduled. don't receive any and there's no record of them in exim logs.

But phplist says they've been processed. i think that either they aren't being created or aren't being passed to exim (in my case via smtp).

Re: PHPLIST 2.10.12 BUG DAILY SEND OF MESSAGES DOESN'T PROCESS

Wait, PHPlist records that the messages are being sent to the users? That's a whole different issue.

One very likely cause (particularly if the users in question are using a major email provider, such as Yahoo!) is that you are being "brownlisted" for sending too many messages in a short amount of time. Check your bounce records, there should be error messages giving you some (if often vague) idea of what the issue is.

No can't be that. i'm getting manually sent emails which I do for various reasons a few times a week. Too many of us are having this exact issue. has to be a defect.

If your 'manual' messages are pretty small (few hundred or less) and your larger messages that you are having problems with are larger (a few thousand or more) and your host allows a high send rate, that is very likely the issue. Particularly if those not receiving the messages are all on the same host (I know for a fact that Yahoo! does what I described).

Did you bother checking your bounce messages?

Your weekly messages could also be getting caught in spam filters.

If PHPlist is recording that the messages are being sent to the users who are not receiving the emails, the odds of it being an issue directly in PHPlist are very low.

Well i'm the host because my servers are dedicated.
I don't believe they are being flagged as spam because the first time I set the message up and schedule it... it does send!

after that nobody receives anymore messages. Don't think that phplist is really creating them.

When you say, "...the first time I set the message up and schedule it... it does send!" what does that mean? Does it send to the entire list? Are you trying to resend the same message?
