Is there any hosting companies in particular that are known to work well with phplist ?

I think you won't have any problem with the hosting company of your choice. If you pick one of the bigger players you should be on the safe side. I don't know of any incompatibility of a hosting company with phplist. Hostgator and compila seem to be popular choices in the community, so maybe they are a good starting point.

Main thing is to ensure the host offers PHP and MySQL with your chosen package, also check on the mail limits the host imposes. That will restrict the number of emails you can send per hour.

Other than that, can recommend Compila and Lunarpages from personal use and don't forget phpList also offer hosted lists now as well.

Latest phpList version is now 3.0.12 (3 February 2015) and requires a minimum of MySQL 5.0 and PHP 5.3.x

Newbie and have been working with HostGator and having problems with bounce backs, which I understand may be because with Hostgator we share the IP address with 3 other bulk mailers and get a lot of bounce backs. Have others had this problem? Is that true with all hosters? Or do we likely have an unrelated problem? Thanks all,
