Users getting blank emails

Postby ncarring » 10:37am, Mon 03 Jun, 2013

Hi, first post. Have done a search but not found anything exactly like my problem, but apologies if it's a commonly asked item.

I have a number of users who are getting blank emails from phplist. Other users get the messages just fine, but these users get just an empty email with the powered by image as an attachment.

All our users are added manually to the database, we don't have self-subscription or unsubscribe pages. All are marked as html initially, although we've had to change a few to text-only in the past. However the people with this problem are not necessarily those who cannot receive html emails.

What could be causing this? Is there some magic in the compose message editor that's somehow producing illegal html or something?

Thanks for any insight

Can't think of anything off hand.

What version of phpList are you using? Has this issue occured recently or is a long term issue?
If the former, what has changed?

Version 2.10.12.

I think I may have identified the issue. Looks like the lady sending the messages has been pasting her content in from Word. Looking at the html source there's all the usual Word style definition xml garbage at the top. Is that known to cause issues?

Thanks

Current version is 2.10.19 so your version, whilst it works, will have a number of security holes and it's recommended to update to latest version, as with all Open Source softwares.

I don't know if the Word gubbins would cause this issue, it probably is, but it sure isn't going to help.

To prove/disprove this, see if you can send a clean email out, ie: without all the Word XML junk that seems to be sent currently, even if it's just to a few people as a test.

You could even see if you receive the original message intact or blank, then send a clean text message and see if that comes correctly. if it does, you've got the solution, now the hard part will be convincing the client to send from a text editor rather than Word.

I've been having the same problem: a minority of users getting blank emails, though most get them just fine.

I've been using phplist for many years quite successfully, but the blank email issue started in about November, best I can determine.

I am using the current version of phplist.

I do not generate code from Word and there are no unusual artifacts I can see within the code.

I've polled those who get the blank emails and they are using a variety of systems, both PC and Mac, and a variety of mail readers: gmail, mail clients, webmail, etc. There does not seem to be a discernible pattern or cause.

Anyone got ideas?

Just a thought here, are you sending aas text or HTML emails? What are the settings that the users receiving blank emails have regarding receiving HTML?

Just guessing in the dark here.

I'm sending as html, and the users that have responded say they have their mail clients set to accept html-formated messages.

Greetings - new user of phplist chiming in. I am experiencing the same issue, the [CONTENT] has stopped sending. Have tried with test list, 3 different emails, 1,gmail 1, web, 1windows live reader. The problem seems to have occured after I imported about 600 users into a new list. But the issue occurs with any one user from that list as well. Have also tried reconciling all users, text & html prefferences. The body of any message now, even without a template never reaches the intended recipient. Only the footer links and a placeholder above the [CONTENT] in html. Have tried commenting out fck editor - same issue. Have tried pasting in from word, notepad++, same issue. Main page dbcheck produces no errors, all green ok checks. I have advanced criteria enabled and 20 attributes but the error occurs before reaching that point.
running version 2.10.19
events and sys msg's going to the correct email but no errors reported.
I have deleted all but the test list and 3 users, same issue.
Again, if I use a template the image, link and text in the top table all get sent, as well as the footer - no [CONTENT]. The text issues the footer only - nothing else.
I have tried to search for other similar topics but nothing to solve this as of yet. Will probably wind up reinstalling all over if need be but I don't want to become obsessed with a daily back-up routine of the hosts - lists folder. Please advise, thank you.

Well to solve the problem I deleted the entire lists folder from the host, deleted all the phplists_ tables in the database, and started from a fresh upload. Made the config changes, added a template, imported users, tested messages with placeholders etc., so far so good.
Decided to ftp a back-up on a working install before any major changes for now - not to happy about that step but it's peace of mind. Sticking with one active, one test list for now & down to 18 attributes. The software seemed to want to work - just wasn't snagging the [content] / [placeholders] from mysql I guess.

Hi
I would seem to have the same, or at least, a similar issue. Some people are getting the emails fine. This is borne out by them using the unsubscribe links in the footer of my emails. I and others here get the emails no problems, others (Externally) however get effectively a blank email that only has the subject line, a blank bodied email with the phplist logo that does display and no footer elements such as unsubscribe?

Some get the images but no text. It's driving me nuts and loosing me members as they are sick to the back teeth of getting blank emails. I've looked at the db structure and run repair/reindex on them all to no avail. Any ideas?
