Swift Mailer (Better than PHPMailer)

Postby jaston » 10:39pm, Wed 07 Feb, 2007

I'd love to see Swift Mailer implemented into PHPList, which would replace the currently used PHPMailer class.

Swift is a fully OOP Library for sending e-mails from PHP websites and applications. Swift is comparable to PHPMailer except that it is much faster, and implements an extremely flexible and innovative plugin system meaning you can get the most out of sending emails from your PHP applications. The interface for Swift is both tighter and more intuitive.

I've used Swift Mailer already and I'm in awe of it's speed & performance, flexibility and ease of use.

Here's some of its features:

* Send uses one single connection to the SMTP server or MTA
* Doesn't rely on mail()
* Custom Headers
* Multiple encoding options
* Unlimited redundant connections (can use mixed types too)
* Connection rotating/load balancing
* TLS Support - for Gmail servers
* Embedded Images or other file types
* Builds and sends Multipart messages
* Sends single-part emails as usual
* Fast Cc and Bcc handling
* Unicode UTF-8 support, with auto-detection
* Handles denied recipients in batch mailing whilst still delivering to the others
* Optional auto-detection of SMTP or Sendmail settings
* Batch emailing with multiple To's or without
* Send to hundreds of thousands of addresses without cron
* Support for multiple attachments
* Protection against header injection
* Set message priority
* Request Read Receipts
* Sendmail (or other binary) support
* Pluggable SMTP Authentication (LOGIN, PLAIN, MD5-CRAM, POP Before SMTP)
* Anti-Flooding support (reconnect every X emails) via plugin
* Secure Socket Layer connections (SSL)
* Loadable plugin support with event handling features

sounds interesting. Best is to add an issue in the issue tracker http://mantis.phplist.com

Is the issue tracker the right place for a suggestion?

Is the issue tracker the right place for a suggestion?

"...the issue tracker is used for BUGS in phplist, not support..."

I'd love to see PHPMailer replaced with SwiftMailer, and I'm sure the whole community would benefit very much. So where can I make a formal suggestion?

yes, mantis is the place. That's why we call it an issue tracker and not a bugtracker :-)

load balancing in Swift Mailer vs. phpmailer

Postby mm » 6:49pm, Tue 03 Apr, 2007

I'm really not sure if I've got this quite right, so PLEASE feel free to correct me! ..but it seems to me that a major factor limiting the speed (and more specifically, the horizontal scalability) of PHPList is that the PHPmailer class can't make use of load balancing to send mail using more than one server, which, forgiving my limited knowlege of mail implementations, seems like something that support for swift mailer would address?

Again, please forgive any gaps in my understanding of this subject matter, but I am hoping to implement an install of PHPList that can scale out in order to increase throughput (ie: the speed of mail queue processing).

Any input is greatly appreciated.
thanks
michael

don't worry about not understanding it, I don't know either. That's how these kind of things work, you can only find out by experimenting with it, and spending time to find the answers to your questions.

Hello everyone.

I started a new mantis group. I own a social network called mymodeltalk.com. We basically help talent find jobs in the industry as a job board.

I have an extra dedicated server and would like to work with you to develop a plugin for swift mailer. I even started a new entry on mantis. I'm not a developer so I can only donate hardware. let me know what you think.

If there is anyone available...

I contacted one of the senior developers for swift mailer. He'd like to consult with a phplist senior dev to begin to initiate a plugin that will allow phplist to take advantage of swift mailer.

1. load balancing for smtp outgoing mail
2. reduced server load
3. its capable of sending over 500k messages per hour.

Please reply so that contact can be made. This would be a big win for phplist. It would be the fastest and most advanced open source bulk mailing platform available.

I've also updated this into mantis.

I'd suggest posting this on the developers mailing list for added exposure: http://mail.tincan.co.uk/mailman/listin ... developers

Michiel / H2 / MrMcCoy

Is this going anywhere? This was 3 years ago now and 2.10.10/11 is still using phpmailer - did inertia kill this suggestion?

Swiftmailer certainly looks a far better solution (especially the bit about "without cron" - think how many forum threads that would kill off).

No its not going anywhere. The reasons I were given were.

1. Phplist is very bulky and the current code is inefficient meaning that to work with swifty a complete re-write of the software would be needed. Currently phplist is limited in scalability by its structure.

2. The developers on the phplist side didn't take an interest in working on the project themselves and nobody on the outside wants to re-engineer such a complex code base they didn't write.

SwiftMailer really rocks! We've been using it in commercial-grade projects for quite some time. I can't see any area where PHPmailer even comes close to compare to SwiftMailer. It's also very easy to use.

Just curious... for you. What makes swiftmailer better? Whats your delivery speeds like? What does it do better in your opinion?
